The Roadshow at the Toronto Home Show, October 2007

Douglas Stocks looks at a painting.Over the Thanksgiving Weekend, the Canadian Antiques Roadshow made a special appearance at the International Home Show in Toronto. Several of our appraisers were on hand to offer free advice to guests and to talk about the new season of shows.

We had some wonderful items show up at the International Home Show in Toronto. A beautiful Belleek teapot came with its owner.

Expert Bill Kime said “It's a 'Tridacna' teapot from the 'Egg Shell Tridacna Tea Ware' range (shape number D356 in the 1904 Belleek catalogue)... this one bears the earliest Belleek mark, which was used 1863-1890... I found a 12 piece tea set (including a tray, which would account for more than half the value) sold recently for $2000... I'd say a teapot might be worth about $200 in good condition.”

Kingdom of Serbia MedalThis medal was dug out of the ground in Belgrade in 1984. Ross Wilson said: “This is the Kingdom of Serbia's Order of St. Sava: the 1st Class Grand Cross Breast Star (that means that it was worn on the lower breast). The Order was instituted by King Mila I in 1883 and was established to reward civilian citizens for achievements in Science and the Arts. This order is a Type III and dates between 1921 and 1941. It would appear to be in very good condition (considering it was buried) and given the interest in European orders on today's market I would think it would be worth in the region of $500-$1000.”

We also saw this great toy car. We didn’t have a toy expert with us in Toronto, so we asked Mike Huen- one of our experts based in Winnipeg to give us his thoughts:“

Toy Race CarThe race car is fabulous. I have not seen this one specifically, but it is Japanese and from the mid 1950's. It is a generic copy of the 1952 Agajanian race car which Troy Ruttman drove to victory in the 1952 Indianapolis 500. I can not tell who made it; the mark on the box is just a bit too small. It appears to be approximately 12" long. (Bigger is better) Based on that size and the style of construction, I feel a fair price in today’s market would be between $400.00 - $600.00 each.”
