Henry
Sandon
One of the world’s most renowned experts on ceramics, Henry started
out as a singer and music teacher at a Grammar School in Worcester. An
amateur interest in archaeology led to the discovery of some Roman pots
in his back yard and Henry’s interest in ceramics blossomed. In
1966 he became the curator of the Dyson Perrins Museum, where he remained
until 1982. He has been an appraiser with the British version of the Antiques
Roadshow since 1979.
Ray
Saunders
After apprenticing as a watch and clock technician, Ray worked for Woodward’s
Stores for ten years as a jeweler, watch & clock repair estimator,
and then received honors in the company's management-training course.
He opened his own business in 1970 building sculptured clocks where he
received a City of Vancouver commission to design and build the worlds’
first steam clock in ‘Gastown’, Vancouver, B. C. Over the
past 30 years he has built more than 65 public clocks, including six different
steam clocks.
Debra
Sawatzky
Debra has over fifteen years of experience in the jewellery business and
is a specialist in period and antique jewellery. She is a member of the
International Society of Appraisers and is also a graduate gemologist
and an Accredited Appraiser of the Canadian Jewellers Institute.
David
Silcox
David is the managing director of Sotheby’s and the author of several
well-received books on Canadian artists. David is the recipient of several
awards and has lectured, worked as a consultant and been the chair of
several arts related boards.
Sheldon
Smithens
Sheldon has been a licensed auctioneer since 1980 and is a member of the
Auctioneers Association of Alberta. Sheldon has a great deal of general
knowledge, but has a particular interest in art glass, bronze, porcelain
and clocks and watches. A regular contributor to the trade magazine, “Discovering
Antiques,” Sheldon has also offered courses on antiques collecting
at the University of Calgary.
James
Snowdon
Jim has been a dealer and consultant in antiques and fine art since 1987.
He has a particular interest in antiques found in the Maritimes with a
special emphasis on furniture and has offered consultation to the National
Museum of Canada, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, The Royal Ontario
Museum, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Museum.
Clive
Stewart-Lockhart
Clive determined that he would collect antiques at the age of 15 when
he saw an advertisement for a sale of paintings at Sotheby’s. When
he left school he joined the famous auction house, working in their ceramics
department for five years. He joined the auctioneers Dreweatt Neate in
1982 and he currently heads their Fine Arts Department. Clive’s
areas of specialty include oriental ceramics and pictures and prints.
Douglas
Stocks
Doug is the President of the Canadian Antique Dealers Association and
has been in the antiques business for thirty years. A well-rounded antiques
dealer, Doug has a particular interest in furniture. He owns and operates
Maus Park Antiques in Paris, Ontario.
Art
Taylor
Art started collecting antique bottles at a very early age and along the
way has gained knowledge in china, furniture and just about everything
else. Past president of the Newfoundland Antique Dealer’s Association,
Art does appraisal and consulting work for the Newfoundland Museum and
has volunteered his services for charity appraisal clinics around Newfoundland.
Lars
Tharp
Lars developed an interest in antiques at the heels of his grandfather,
a leading expert on the Danish Bronze Age. He studied archaeology at Cambridge,
is a keen cellist and began his career as a junior cataloguer at Sotheby’s.
Lars has headed up the Ceramics and Oriental Works of Art and Musical
Instruments departments at Sotheby’s and currently works as an independent
consultant.
Michael
Thompson
Michael began collecting books at a young age and by the time he was 23
he was dealing in antique books and first editions. He was president of
the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of Canada and attended
the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers Presidents Meetings
in Vienna, Austria and Florence, Italy. Michael has 24 years experience
buying, selling and appraising antiquarian books, modern first editions
and related items.
Bjarne
Tokerud
Beginning with a bookstore in 1981, Bjarne has been buying and selling
antiques books for 24 years. Past president of the Antiquarian Booksellers’
Association of Canada, Bjarne is also a member of the Provincial Booksellers
Fairs Association and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers.
Bjarne has experience appraising rare books, documents, ephemera, vintage
photographs and accumulated family archives. He lives and works in Victoria.
John
Townsend
John has been in the antiquarian book business for thirty years buying
and selling rare and out of print books, maps and photos. He has been
doing book appraisals in the Halifax area for over twenty-five years and
his particular areas of interest are early Canadiana, illustrated books
and children’s books. He owns Schooner Books in Halifax.
Alfred
Van Peteghem
Born in Belgium, Alfred arrived in Montreal in 1969 and began working
as a cataloguer of antiquarian books and manuscripts for Christie’s
with Montreal Book Auctions Ltd. For several months he managed Montreal
Book Auctions, earning a reputation as an expert in the field of rare
material. Alfred has published over 30 catalogues and has published several
articles with scholarly journals and has assisted in organizing the Montreal
Antiquarian Bookfair for several years.
Michael
Wagnell
An avid collector of antiques for over 40 years, Mike’s particularly
interested in clocks, watches and English furniture. A member of the British
Horological Society, Mike has acted as an appraiser for many events over
the years including Heirloom Discovery Days for Sotheby’s.
Odon
Wagner
Odon’s passion for art was nurtured at the Academy of Applied Arts
in Vienna and through his work at the Louvre and the Royal Ontario Museum.
He opened his art restoration studio in Toronto in 1970, offering personal
advice on the restoration and collecting of fine art. Odon is often called
upon to give appraisals to individuals, insurance companies and corporations.
Susan
Whitney
Susan specializes in sculpture, craft, folk art and paintings. A member
of several professional organizations, Susan is the President of the Saskatchewan
Professional Art Galleries Association and a member of the Cultural Industries
Council of Canada.
Ross
Wilson
Ross has spent most of his life as a military antiquarian. This included
eleven years with the Canadian War Museum as the Curator of Dress and
Insignia and a decade as a historic sites curator with Parks Canada. His
extensive knowledge of arms and militaria includes medals and decorations,
uniforms and accouterments, particular those of the 18th and 19th century.
And
although his specialities include British and Canadian
medals, swords and flintlock and percussion firearms, he has a discerning
eye for military ephemera from all periods.
As
an independent appraiser and consultant, Ross has provided services to
individuals and institutions, including the Canadiana Fund, Canadian Museum
of Civilisation and the Canadian War Museum. He is a Fellow of the Company
of Military Historians, a member of the Orders and Medals Research Society
and the Naval Historical Collectors and Research Association.
In
his rare spare time he creates fine military figurines which have won
him an international reputation. He is working on his first novel.
Andrew
Zegers
Andrew has been in the antiques business for over 20 years and has a particular
interest in Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and mid-century modernism. He and Bill
Hogan organize a yearly antiques fair called the Flamboro Antiques Show
which is held in Aberfoyle, Ontario. Andrew has been an appraiser and
guest speaker for the University Women’s Club and a champion for
modern glass.
Morris
Zimelstern
A second generation antiques dealer, Morris is a dedicated dealer, gemologist,
and authority in antiques based in Montreal. He is particularly interested
in jewellery, silver and bronzes. He owns Coach House Antiques.
